A photograph of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Turkish Republic, has been launched into space by the space shuttle Discovery, which has just completed its last mission.Ali Rıza Özsaran, who contacted astronaut Bill McArthur through an amateur wireless station in 2005, told Anatolia news agency on Friday that NASA earlier announced that it would launch photos into space on one of two space shuttle flights before the spacecraft were to be retired from service.
"I learnt that photos could be launched into space and decided to send a photo of Atatürk to the shuttle," Özsaran said. "NASA sent me a commemorative certificate which said that the photo was launched into space. The certificate was signed by Steve Lindsey, commander of the flight between Feb. 24 and March 9. The last mission of Discovery was very important for Turkey.”
