Οι εξαγωγές ζωντανών ζώων σε τρίτες χώρες για σφαγή ή πάχυνση, αποτελούν οπισθοδρόμηση, απάνθρωπη μεταχείριση των ζώων με σκληρότητα και δεν έχουν θέση στη σύγχρονη Ευρώπη.
Πέρυσι βιντεοσκόπηση σε σφαγεία της Αιγύπτου αποδεικνύει τις φριχτές μεθόδους της σφαγής ζώων χωρίς αναισθητοποίηση.
Η κατάσταση στη Λιβύη θα είναι παρόμοια.

Call for Irish Agriculture Minister to stand down as President of EU Agriculture Council when animal welfare is on the agenda

Ireland will resume the horrific trade of live cattle exports to Libya this week, after a break of more than 15 years. The resumption coincides with Ireland’s Presidency of the EU.

 According to newspaper reports, a shipment of nearly 3,000 cattle will leave Waterford in Ireland for Libya at some point this week on board the Al Mahmoud Express. Irish cattle sent to Libya may well suffer during the long sea journey which takes at least a week.

They can be expected to suffer once they reach Libya. Many investigations in recent years have revealed extremely poor treatment of animals during transport and slaughter in the countries of the Middle East including Lebanon and Egypt. There is a danger that conditions in Libya will be similar.

 Philip Lymbery, CEO of Compassion in World Farming says: “This is a significant backwards step by Ireland, just at the time when the country should be showing leadership at the EU level. Live exports are cruel, archaic and there is no place for them in modern Europe.”

  On arrival in Libya the Irish cattle will likely be crammed onto an overcrowded truck that will take them on a stressful journey to their final destination - a feedlot or slaughterhouse. Animals that are injured or sick after the long voyage from Ireland are unlikely to receive any veterinary care – they too will be packed onto the truck.

As recently as last year, Compassion released shocking footage taken of slaughter in Egypt where poor and inept slaughter techniques mean animals face an horrific death. Conditions in Libya may be similar. Our film shows slaughtermen severing the leg tendons of cattle with a knife to restrain them. We also see cattle being beaten – very hard - on the head with a large pole. In many cases it takes several blows before the animal is so dazed that it falls to the ground when its throat is then cut.

Irish cattle sent to Libya are very unlikely to be stunned – rendered unconscious – before slaughter. Their throats will be cut while they are fully conscious and they will be left to bleed to death

But incidents involving live transport ships have seen thousands of animals die. For example, last year the Pearl of Para and the Gracia del Mar were involved in separate live exports disasters that cost the lives of several thousand animals.

Article 13 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union provides that “in formulating and implementing the Union’s agriculture [and] transport ... policies, the Union and the Member States shall “pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals”.

Ireland’s proposed exports to Libya are in breach of the Treaty as it is clear that Irish cattle are likely to suffer greatly in the course of this trade. This trade is not paying “full regard” to animal welfare; indeed, it seems to be largely ignoring the well-being of the animals and paying virtually no regard to their welfare..

Philip Lymbery adds: “We urge Ireland, even at this eleventh hour, to think again and pull out of this brutal trade in living creatures. If they do not Ireland must forfeit its role as President of the EU Agriculture Council when animal welfare is being discussed. A country that is cynically ignoring the EU Treaty’s provisions on animal welfare is unfit to lead EU decision-making in this area.”

Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Tuesday demanded that Pakistan investigate and explain the brutal killing of 21,000 Australian sheep in Karachi, a slaughter officials have described as appalling.
The shipment of Australian sheep was sent to the port city after being turned away by Bahrain, with Pakistan livestock officials ordering them to be culled over disease concerns.
Graphic footage of their slaughter was aired by ABC's Four Corners programme on Monday, including images of a man sawing at a sheep's neck before throwing it into a bloody trench. Other sheep were bulldozed into the pit after being killed last month, but some were seen the next morning still breathing, sparking angry condemnation of their treatment.
Gillard said she had spoken to her Pakistani counterpart Raja Pervez Ashraf at a summit of European and Asian leaders in Laos to express her concern.
"I did raise with the prime minister of Pakistan my concern about the graphic and very cruel images we've seen of the treatment of Australian sheep," she told reporters in Vientiane.
"I explained to him that Australians are distressed to see these acts of cruelty and that I wanted the matter investigated.
"He undertook to investigate the matter ... I was very clear about Australia's concerns, very strong in raising those concerns and very clear that this is something that has distressed the Australian people."

Australia Agriculture Minister Joe Ludwig earlier called the slaughter "appalling" and his department disputed that the sheep were unhealthy.
"We do not know the reasoning behind the Pakistan authority's decision to cull the sheep in Pakistan or their choice of the method used," the agriculture ministry said.
"We continue to hold that both the decision and the method used were unnecessary."
Livestock officials ordered the sheep to be culled after they tested positive for salmonella and actinomyces bacteria.
Although samples from the sheep were sent to a British laboratory and came back clean, clearing the meat for human consumption, municipal officials in Karachi rejected the tests.
Pakistani officials insisted the animals were slaughtered in keeping with Islamic practice, but said enquiries would be made.
"As far as we know the culling was done in accordance with the rules. The animals were slaughtered in Islamic manner," a senior official with Sindh provincial livestock ministry said.
"However, we will investigate the reports alleging the Australian sheep were brutalised during the slaughter."
Australian farmers urged against a ban on the live export trade, saying significant improvements had been made in regulating Australia's live export market since a controversy in Indonesia last year.
Canberra suspended live cattle exports to Indonesia for a month last year after a television documentary revealed mistreatment inside its abattoirs, only reinstating the trade under a strict new licensing system.
Australia's National Farmers Federation said "decisive action" had been taken to temporarily suspend exports of sheep to Pakistan and Bahrain while investigations were carried out.
The farming lobby group stressed that Australia was a world leader in animal treatment in exports and warned that banning the trade would see welfare standards fall.
"If Australia was to stop exporting livestock, global animal welfare standards would unquestionably decline," it said.
In a separate development, a US-based animal rights group on Tuesday urged Australia to ban livestock exports to Egypt, where a government-tasked committee is recommending the ears of hormone-treated cattle be chopped off.
Egyptian newspapers say the committee made the recommendation in a bid to rid livestock imported from Australia of hormone implants found in their ears.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals urged Australia's government to ban cattle exports to Egypt to avoid the practice.
Australia's live export trade is worth about US$1 billion a year and employs thousands of people.

Η μαμά των γερανών

Οι απειλούμενοι με εξαφάνιση γερανοί του είδους Whooping cranes, (πουλιά της ευτυχίας  και της μακροζωίας, θεωρούνται αγγελιοφόροι των θεών στην γλώσσα των συμβόλων) συχνά αναπαράγονται σε αιχμαλωσία και μετά ελευθερώνονται ώστε να διασφαλιστεί η επιβίωσή τους.

Οι φροντιστές τους στα καταφύγια άγριας ζωής, συνήθως φορούν στολές τύπου πόντσου (shapeless, poncho-like costumes) για να μη νομίζουν οι νεοσσοί ότι οι άνθρωποι είναι  οι γονείς τους.

Η κουκούλα στο κεφάλι έχει καμουφλάζ ώστε ο φροντιστής να βλέπει χωρίς να τον βλέπουν και η « whooping crane “parent” puppet» είναι έτοιμη να διδάξει στους μικρούς νεοσσούς πώς να τρώνε.

Whooping cranes are some of the world's most endangered animals, so they're often raised in captivity and then released to help ensure their survival.

Crane caretakers must wear shapeless, poncho-like costumes to

prevent the baby birds from mistaking humans for their parents.

The hood of the suit has camouflage netting so caretakers can see without being seen, and the whooping crane “parent” puppet is used to teach young cranes how to eat.

2χρονο αγοράκι ενοχλεί τους γείτονες, επειδή γελάει

Αγγλία, Walsall, West Midlands,   Ιδιοκτήτες συγκροτήματος κατοικιών κατηγορούν ένα δίχρονο αγοράκι για αντικοινωνική συμπεριφορά και παραβίαση των όρων μίσθωσης.  Συγκεκριμένα κατηγορούν τον μικρό, επειδή γελάει έντονα όταν παρακολουθεί την αγαπημένη του εκπομπή στην TV και διαταράσσει τη γαλήνη των γειτόνων του με τον θόρυβο που προκαλεί.

Το Walsall Housing Group έστειλε επιστολή στον μικρό Chenlair Bent όπου τον προειδοποιεί ότι υπάρχουν παράπονα από γείτονες και εάν δεν συμμορφωθεί, θα πάρουν μέτρα εναντίον του.

΄Εκπληκτη η 22χρονη μητέρα του Jodie Holden, (που χαρακτηρίζεται ως full-time mother)  απάντησε πως ο 2χρονος γιός της δεν μπορεί να ανοίξει ένα φάκελο και δεν ξέρει ακόμα να διαβάζει. Ο μόνος θόρυβος που κάνει, είναι το γέλιο του όταν βλέπει TV.

Σύμφωνα με το πόρισμα του (NCBI) η συσκευή μπορεί να αποδειχθεί σωτήρια.

The U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) conducted a study on the effect of AutoPulse in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest resuscitations in 2010. σε τρεις μέρες η κολυμβήτρια επανήλθε σε φυσιολογική κατάσταση, χωρίς αναπηρία.

ΚΤΗΝΟΒΑΤΗΣ με ΠΑΓΩΝΙ στις ΗΠΑ

ΗΠΑ, Illinois, Chicago, suburb Roselle, ο 63χρονος David Beckman κακοποίησε σεξουαλικά και θανάτωσε το κατοικίδιο παγώνι του με το όνομα Phyl.

Η αστυνομία τον καταζητούσε για σεξουαλική παρενόχληση ενός ανήλικου παιδιού όταν ανακάλυψε στο γκαράζ του, το νεκρό παγώνι και διαπίστωσε την πράξη κτηνοβασίας.

Ο Beckman που κρατείται στη φυλακή DuPage County Jail με εγγύηση $10,000, αντιμετωπίζει κατηγορίες για σωματική απειλή, σεξουαλική τηλεφωνική παρενόχληση,  κατοχή μαριχουάνας και σύνεργα χρήσης ναρκωτικών, σεξουαλική επίθεση σε ανήλικο και βασανισμό ζώων.

Θα δικαστεί στις 12-6-13.

Sadly, the alleged animal abuse isn't the only one to make headlines recently.

 In April, Kurtis Peterson, a Michigan man, was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison for having sex with two dogs.

In February, Andrew Mendoza pleaded guilty to public lewdness and criminal trespassing for trying to make a baby with his neighbor's horse. "I was thinking it would have a horseman baby," he stated in a court document.

Douglas Spink And The Bestiality Farm

51-year-old Douglas Spink was arrested after officials allegedly caught him running a "bestiality farm" in Washington State, near the Canadian border. Spink allegedly kept dozens of horses, dogs, and mice, which he provided to visitors who wanted to engage in sexual acts with animals.

A 51-year-old British tourist Stephen Clarke, who was allegedly visiting the farm, was also arrested.

 

Kevin Dean Parrish to Lyon, Oregon, deputies that he lost control with Kudo, his grandmother's 9-pound Chihuahua-Pincher, so he grabbed the dog and started punching it in the head with his fist. Then he tried to strangle the dog and then put him in an oven he had pre-heated to 350 degrees for his lunch. Parrish was arrested and booked at the Marion County Jail in Salem, Ore., on one count of Aggravated Abuse 1.

Εκατοντάδες μυστηριώδεις κίτρινες σφαίρες βρέθηκαν κάτω από το Ναό του φτερωτού φιδιού, κρυμμένες σε ένα ανεξερεύνητο τούνελ, στην περιοχή Teotihuacan του Μεξικού, κοντά στην  Πυραμίδα του Ήλιου.

Οι σφαίρες που έχουν διάμετρο 2- 4 εκατοστά είναι φτιαγμένες από άργιλο αλλά μοιάζουν να είναι χρυσές γιατί καλύπτονται από γιαροσίτη (γνωστό με την ονομασία Fool's Gold)  με υαλώδη λάμψη.

Οι αρχαιολόγοι (από το Mexico National Institute of Anthropology and History) πιστεύουν πως χρησιμοποιήθηκαν για θρησκευτικές τελετές.

Οι σφαίρες αποκαλύφθηκαν με ένα μικροσκοπικό ρομπότ  (Tláloc II-TC) με κάμερα και ρομποτικό  βραχίονα που σάρωσε με κάμερα τις υπόγειες σήραγγες.

Η Monsanto δικαιώθηκε στο Ανώτατο δικαστήριο των ΗΠΑ

Απόφαση ορόσημο από το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο των ΗΠΑ,   για το ζήτημα της ιδιοκτησίας των μεταλλαγμένων σπόρων της Monsanto.
Το Ανώτατο δικαστήριο δικαίωσε την  γιγαντιαία βιοτεχνική εταιρεία Monsanto, για την αγωγή που κατέθεσε εναντίον του 75χρονου αγρότη Vernon Hugh Bowman, από την Ιντιάνα για «παραβίαση δικαιωμάτων ευρεσιτεχνίας»
Η υπόθεση αφορά την κατοχυρωμένη με δίπλωμα ευρεσιτεχνίας σόγια της Monsanto, γνωστή και ως Roundup Ready.

Σύμφωνα με τους όρους της Monsanto, οι σπόροι Roundup Ready μπορούν να συλλέγονται μόνο μία φορά και δεν επιτρέπεται να αποθηκευτούν ή να ξαναχρησιμοποιηθούν.

Η Monsanto απαγορεύει στους αγρότες να ξαναφυτεύουν μεταλλαγμένους σπόρους δεύτερης γενιάς που προέρχονται από δικές τους καλλιέργειες και έτσι επιδιώκει να ελέγχει παγκοσμίως τις καλλιέργειες.

Η εταιρεία κατέθεσε αγωγή εναντίον του Bowman, το 2011, πρωτόδικα κέρδισε την υπόθεση και απαίτησε  84.500 δολάρια από τον Bowman

Ο 75χρονος αγρότης που  ήταν ήδη σε κατάσταση πτώχευσης απευθύνθηκε στο Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο.

Η Monsanto υποστηρίζει πως οι αγρότες όπως ο Bowman δεν έχουν δικαίωμα να χρησιμοποιήσουν τους σπόρους δεύτερης γενιάς που προκύπτουν από τις καλλιέργειες με γενετικά τροποποιημένους οργανισμούς, αλλά επιτρέπεται να αξιοποιήσουν μόνο την συγκομιδή των καλλιεργειών αυτών.

Το Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο αποφάσισε ομόφωνα υπέρ της προστασίας των δικαιωμάτων ευρεσιτεχνίας της Monsanto ώστε να συνεχίσει τις καινοτόμες έρευνες βιοτεχνολογίας στις ΗΠΑ που εξυπηρετούν μεγάλο φάσμα βιομηχανιών από τη γεωργία μέχρι την ιατρική.

Έχουν ήδη εκδικαστεί 142 αγωγές εναντίον 410 αγροτών και 52 μικρών επιχειρήσεων (στις ΗΠΑ) από τις οποίες η Monsanto εισέπραξε 23 εκατομμύρια δολάρια.

 Στις 25 Μαΐου είναι προγραμματισμένη η διαμαρτυρία κατά της πολυεθνικής εταιρείας βιοτεχνολογίας Monsanto στην οποία θα συμμετέχουν 36 χώρες από όλες τις ηπείρους.

Το Μάρτιο το Αμερικάνικο Κογκρέσο πέρασε ειδικό νόμο (Monsanto Protection Act) που επιτρέπει στη εταιρία την παραγωγή και πώληση γενετικά μεταλλαγμένων τροφών παρά την παγκόσμια διαμαρτυρία από περιβαλλοντολόγους, γεωπόνους, καλλιτέχνες  και καταναλωτές

 

Στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο θα γίνουν 4 ταυτόχρονες διαμαρτυρίες (οι δύο σε Λονδίνο και Μπρίστολ) ενώ στις ΗΠΑ προγραμματίστηκαν διαμαρτυρίες σε 46 από τις 50 πολιτείες.


13-5-13  Monsanto wins landmark patent case in Supreme Court
  The United States Supreme Court ruled Monday in favor of biotech giant Monsanto, closing the door on a patent case that has pitted a smalltime farmer from Indiana against a titan of the agriculture industry.
The high court said early Monday that 75-year-old farmer Vernon Bowman of Indiana violated Monsanto’s patent rights when he purchased a mix of seeds from a grain elevator that he later planted on his Midwest farm. That mix included patented Roundup Ready soybean seeds manufactured by Monsanto that are sold under license because they can hold up against their namesake, a nasty pesticide regularly used on farms.
Bowman argued that he could do whatever he wanted with the Roundup Ready seeds since he obtained them rightfully from a grain elevator and the terms of Monsanto’s licensing agreement under the patent did not apply to him. Under Monsanto’s terms, Roundup Ready seeds can only be harvested once and must not be saved or reused.

“If they don’t want me to go to the elevator and buy that grain, then Congress should pass a law saying you can’t do it,” Bowman told RT in February.

On Monday, the Supreme Court decided unanimously that Bowman indeed violated the licensing terms.

Τhe relationship between Monsanto and the country’s high court has been called into question since one of the justices, Clarence Thomas, formerly served as a lawyer for the St. Louis-based company.

On May 25, an international series of rallies to protest Monsanto is scheduled to occur with demonstrations planned on six continents.

"He wanted to use our technology without paying for it," says David Snively, Monsanto's general counsel.
Monsanto took Bowman to court, and Bowman was ordered to pay Monsanto $84,000 for infringing the company's patent.

A number of industry organizations have come to Monsanto's defense, including the Biotechnology Industry Organization.

Monsanto says that a victory for Mr. Bowman would allow farmers to essentially save seeds from one year’s crop to plant the next year, eviscerating patent protection. In Mr. Bowman’s part of Indiana, it says, a single acre of soybeans can produce enough seeds to plant 26 acres the next year.
The decision might also apply to live vaccines, cell lines and DNA used for research or medical treatment, and some types of nanotechnology.
