Απαγορευμένες ουσίες που ανεβάζουν το επίπεδο TCO2 του αλόγου
The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission will begin testing Thoroughbred race horses for total carbon dioxide, or TCO2, after approving a policy to conduct the testing at its June 17 meeting.
Since that time, commission staff worked to develop the policy, which strictly prohibits the use of agents or substances that elevate a horse's TCO2 level beyond what is naturally present.
TCO2 in horses is believed to have a performance-enhancing quality by limiting muscle fatigue and increasing endurance.
The Jockey Club has said that elevated total carbon dioxide levels, regardless of cause, are violations of the rules and penalties for excessive TCO2 are severe.

Γιατί αιμορραγούν τα άλογα αγώνων
The strain of a two-minute race can cause problems for horses. They may be unable to get enough oxygen to their tissues and carbon dioxide may build up in their blood. Blood vessels in their lungs sometimes burst from the strain and if enough burst, the horse may bleed from its nose.
Physiologists are still trying to understand why horses are susceptible to this bleeding but inhaling dust into the lungs may play a role, as may the shock produced as the horse’s 1,200 pound body lands on its legs in full gallop.
Oxygen consumption is key,   Horses need a lot of oxygen when they run. They carry their own emergency supply in their spleens.
