3-2-2012 Monkeys go happy with wine It is believed that red wine combined with spices and served warm is the best defence against the cold with night temperatures at the Kazakh city of Karaganda dropping by minus 38 degrees Celsius .
“Each monkey gets about 50 grams of mulled wine. We put a bottle of wine in a kettle, add sliced apples, lemon and sugar to taste as well as some boiling water,” the Deputy Director of the zoo Svetlana Pilyug explained.
She says the sweet mulled wine is a guaranteed spirit raiser for the animals.
“It is normal practice,’ Svetlana added. ‘In winter time when animals are to be transferred to another zoo or when they move from summer houses to winter ones, they need to be given something to unwind. Most often it’s dessert wine. All zoos across the world do it,” she explained.

Monkeys were then filmed drinking the "grog" from the spout of the kettle, as a keeper coaxed them, saying "Drink, drink, drink". 'Completely wrong' Emma Edwards, a spokesperson for the Zoological Society of London, told the BBC News website the zoo was not familiar with the facility at Karaganda.
"It's absolutely not the norm to give any animals alcohol, diluted or otherwise," she said.
"Alcohol lowers the blood temperature so it would be completely the wrong thing to do." http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-16871325
