Δοκιμαστικές εκρήξεις αυτοσχέδιων εκρηκτικών μηχανισμών [ Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)] στο στρατιωτικό εργαστήριο μυστικών ερευνών Porton Down,του Βρετανικού Υπουργείου Άμυνας που βρίσκεται κοντά στο Salisbury στο Wiltshire, της Αγγλίας. 21-5-2010 Το Βρετανικό Υπουργείο Άμυνας παραδέχεται ότι έκανε δοκιμαστική χρήση των IEDs στο Porton Down, σε 119 ζωντανά γουρούνια τα τελευταία τέσσερα χρόνια.
Στρατιωτικά πειράματα δοκιμής των IEDs μελετούν την επίδραση των εκρήξεων σε ζώα –χοίρους- που ανατινάζονται ζωντανά. Τα ζώα αιμορραγούν μέχρι θανάτου για να διαπιστωθεί ο χρόνος αντοχής ενός τραυματία σε περιπτώσεις καθυστερημένης μεταφοράς του στο νοσοκομείο. Μερικά ζώα ανατινάζονται με θωράκιση -τυλίγονται με Kevlar- για τη μελέτη βελτίωσης της θωράκισης του σώματος στις εκρήξεις και τη βελτίωση της ιατρικής περίθαλψης των τραυμάτων.
Στο Porton Down τα πειραματόζωα είναι ειδικής φυλής λευκά γουρούνια που το δέρμα τους είναι παρόμοιο με το ανθρώπινο δέρμα.

Επίσημα κυβερνητικά στοιχεία αποκαλύπτουν ότι 25 χοίροι χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στις δοκιμαστικές εκρήξεις με IEDs,το 2006, 19 χοίροι το 2007, 40 το 2008 και 35 το 2009.
Σύμφωνα με κυβερνητικές ανακοινώσεις, 50.000 πειραματόζωα (πρόβατα, πίθηκοι και βοοειδή) χρησιμοποιήθηκαν στις έρευνες του Porton Down, από το 2006 μέχρι το 2009. (στις έρευνες περιλαμβάνονται δοκιμές χημικών και βιολογικών όπλων όπως άνθρακας και αέριο σαρίν (Anthrax και nerve gas)

Scientists blew up 119 pigs at Porton Down research centre in Salisbury. They were investigating the effects of IEDs and explosives used by the Taliban.
Animal rights campaigners expressed outrage last night after the Ministry of Defence admitted blowing up 119 live pigs in explosives tests.
The research took place at the Government's secret military research laboratory Porton Down, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, between 2006 and 2009.
Official figures reveal 25 pigs were used in improvised explosive device experiments in 2006, 19 in 2007, 40 in 2008, and 35 in 2009. The breed of pigs used in the experiments have skin similar to humans.
The MoD wraps pigs in materials used to make body armour, such as Kevlar, to determine how effective it is at reducing damage from IEDs.
Government figures show more than 50,000 animals, including sheep, monkeys and cattle, have been subject to experiments at Porton Down in the past four years, including ones using chemical and biological weapons such as Anthrax and nerve gas.

24-1-2010 Porton Down, 18 λευκά γουρούνια ανατινάζονται ζωντανά σε μυστικό στρατιωτικό πείραμα. Τα ζώα τυλίχθηκαν σε ειδικό προστατευτικό σεντόνι Kevlar,για να εκτεθούν σε εκρήξεις βομβών IEDs. Οι ερευνητές άφησαν τα ζώα να αιμορραγήσουν μέχρι να χάσουν το ένα τρίτο από το αίμα τους, έτσι διαπίστωσαν για πόσο χρονικό διάστημα άντεξαν να μείνουν ζωντανά με τα τραύματά τους, μετά από την έκρηξη. LIVE pigs are being blown up with explosives at Porton Down, the government’s secret military research laboratory, to simulate the effect of terrorist attacks on civilian targets.
In a series of tests at the biological and chemical research centre in Wiltshire, 18 large pigs were wrapped in protective blankets before bombs were detonated a few feet away. The scientists allowed the pigs to bleed until almost a third of their blood was gone to see how long they could be kept alive.
MPs and animal welfare groups have questioned the use of live animals in the explosions, even though the pigs were anaesthetised throughout. None survived the experiments.
The pigs were wrapped in Kevlar blankets to protect them from minor bomb debris and placed less than three yards from the explosive. Before being blown up, they had tubes inserted into their blood vessels and bladders, and their spleens removed. A major blood vessel in the abdomen had a wire put into it so the vessel was lacerated during the blast.
Porton Down, originally set up to research chemical warfare during the first world war, uses a special breed of white pig that has skin resembling human flesh.

Military researchers have dressed live pigs in body armor and strapped them into Humvee simulators that were then blown up with explosives to study the link between roadside bomb blasts and brain injury. For an 11-month period that ended in December, researchers subjected pigs and rats to about 200 blasts, according to Pentagon documents and interviews. The explosions have ranged in intensity, wounding some of the pigs and killing others. Roadside bombs are the top killer of U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The research on pigs has determined that body armor does not worsen brain injury, said Jan Walker, a spokeswoman for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, or DARPA, which conducted the study. Pigs without body armor died from blasts within 24 to 48 hours, while those with armor survived "significantly higher blasts," she said.
Col. Geoffrey Ling, who led the study, said pigs are good subjects because their brains are more similar to human brains than those of rats. Pig hearts and lungs are also similar to humans'.
DARPA declined to say where the tests had taken place. The next round of the testing is scheduled for later this year

The number of animals used in British military experiments, including biological and chemical warfare tests, has doubled in the past five years, prompting protests from MPs who fear that the live animal tests are being conducted on behalf of foreign powers.
More than 21,000 animals, including monkeys, ferrets and pigs, were subjected to experiments at the secret biological and chemical research centre at Porton Down last year. The number of animals used at the top-secret Wiltshire research centre has gone up by 76 per cent since 2000.
Although details of the tests are secret, it is known that monkeys in the secret Wiltshire military labs have been exposed to anthrax. Pigs have had 40 per cent of their blood drained and been injected with E coli. Others have been exposed to poison gas and lethal nerve agents. Porton Down has in the past shot anaesthetised pigs to help develop body armour.
Last year, 54 "non-human primates" believed to be marmosets, rhesus monkeys and macaques, were subjected to military tests at Porton Down, up from 34 in 2000. Sixty ferrets were also used, and 20,000 mice, double the 2000 number.
