ο ΜΑΚΑΚΟΣ Darwin που βρέθηκε στο ΙΚΕΑ, θα παραμείνει στο ΚΑΤΑΦΥΓΙΟ

Καναδάς, επαρχία Οντάριο, Τορόντο. Η Yasmin Nakhuda «μητέρα» της μαϊμούς Darwin έχασε μετά από δύο χρόνια, τη δικαστική διαμάχη για την επιμέλεια της κατοικίδιας μαϊμούς, που τώρα ζει σε ένα καταφύγιο ζώων.
Το δικαστήριο της επιδίκασε το ποσό των 83000 δολαρίων, πέραν των δικών της δικαστικών εξόδων.
Η μαϊμού Darwin συγκέντρωσε την παγκόσμια προσοχή όταν τον Δεκέμβριο 2012 δραπέτευσε από το αυτοκίνητο της Nakhuda και βρέθηκε στο πάρκινγκ της ΙΚΕΑ φορώντας ένα χνουδωτό σακάκι.
Η μαϊμού στη συνέχεια κατασχέθηκε από την υπηρεσία TAS (Toronto animal services)  και δόθηκε στο καταφύγιο Story Brook Farm Primate Sanctuary στο Sunderland Ont.,

έκτοτε, μια έντονη διαμάχη ξεκίνησε ανάμεσα στην Nakhuda και το Story Brook Farm Primate Sanctuary για την κυριότητα του ζώου.
Η Nakhuda δήλωσε πως η σελίδα 'DDM (Darling Darwin Monkey) στο Facebook δεν θα κλείσει, ο Darwin είναι δικός της και κανένας δεν θα πάρει τον Darwin από την καρδιά, την ψυχή και το μυαλό της. Ο Darwin δεν ανήκει στο μικρό κελί του καταφυγίου.
Σύμφωνα με το Toronto Star, τον Ιούνη του 2013 η Sherri Delaney, ιδρύτρια του καταφυγίου Story Brook Farm Primate Sanctuary δέχθηκε απειλές για τη ζωή της, από τους υποστηρικτές της Nakhuda.
«Τον Σεπτέμβριο του 2013, ο δικαστής στο Ανώτατο Δικαστήριο του Οντάριο έκρινε ότι ο Darwin είναι ένα άγριο ζώο, και με βάση τη νομολογία, η κα Nakhuda έχασε την κυριότητα του, τη στιγμή που δραπέτευσε από το αυτοκίνητό της,»

το Story Brook Farm Primate Sanctuary λέει πως ότι « επειδή ο Darwin ανατράφηκε σε ένα ανθρώπινο σπίτι, μόλις τώρα μαθαίνει, αργά αλλά σταθερά, να είναι περισσότερο πίθηκος παρά άνθρωπος, μάλιστα φλερτάρει με τους γείτονες του και μαθαίνει να μιμείται τις φωνές των άλλων πιθήκων».

Η Yasmin Nakhuda αγόρασε τον μικρό Darwin (Japanese snow macaque) από έναν έμπορο εξωτικών ζώων που ονομάζεται Ayaz. Η Nakhuda γνώριζε ότι είναι παράνομο να κατέχει έναν μακάκο, στο Τορόντο.
Μάλιστα δυσκολεύτηκε πολύ για να του μάθει να ζει και να ντύνεται «ανθρώπινα» Το ζώο αντιδρούσε και δάγκωνε. Εξαναγκάστηκε να υποστεί σκληρή εκπαίδευση –συχνά με πόνο, ενώ φορούσε πολλές ώρες harness- για να ζει σαν άνθρωπος. Μάλιστα η Nakhuda σκεφτόταν να του αφαιρέσει κάποια δόντια για να μη προκαλέσει βλάβη σε άνθρωπο όταν μεγαλώσει.
Εάν οDarwin ήταν θετικός στα τεστ για κάποιες ασθένειες- κυρίως hepatitis B-  η TAS (Toronto animal services) έπρεπε να κάνει ευθανασία στο ζώο.
Τα καταφύγια ζώων στο Τορόντο αναλαμβάνουν συνήθως σκύλους και γάτες, ήταν δύσκολο να βρεθεί καταφύγιο που θα φιλοξενούσε ένα άγριο ζώο.

We have spent close to $250,000, to get back a pet we loved. We've faced ridicule, insults and our work and health suffered but we never relented out of pure selfless love. We have no regrets. None whatsoever.

But being told that there was "no winning" after paying $675 per hour to have the case reviewed was very hard to swallow.

Darwin's fate was sealed when we paid $83,000 to Sherri Delaney on 19th February 2014 in accordance to the court's costs order.

We could have paid less if we agreed among many other things, to (1) bring down this Darling Darwin Facebook page, (2) give up "Monkey Mess" a book dedicated to Darwin, (3) take down all our YouTube videos of Darwin and all pictures of Darwin - the only things we have left of our precious one other than our memories.

We refused. This was insult to injury and has angered and hurt us. A copy of this insulting letter of settlement is attached herein. This letter has in fact now reinforced our determination not to let the DDM Page die.

DDM Facebook page WILL REMAIN and in fact shall thrive. It will be Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary's reminder that they have mere "possession" of Darwin but can never own him as Darwin is ours and will always remain ours in our heart, mind and soul. They will NEVER take this away from us.

We truly believe that when justice fails to be rendered in man's courtroom that natural justice never fails to prevail to correct the imbalance. We have faith and trust in the power of love and we are here to stay and will be a constant reminder to Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary that a story book ending is when Darwin breaks out of his jail cell at Story Book Farm leading all other residents out of their miserable captivity for the pleasure of an animal hoarder and for financial gain.

This has not ended and will not end. We have faith and time will tell.We therefore urge our supporters not to let DDM page die for love of Darwin. DDM will stay alive to ensure Darwin and other Story Book Farm residents are not exploited and put on display to raise donations.

We thank you all for your unconditional love and support for over a year and count on you more than ever to move forward on this mission.
